The Maitland track has been suspended since April 27 when three greyhounds sustained serious injuries across three consecutive races. Two were euthanised and the meeting was abandoned after race six.
Greyhound Racing NSW and independent expert Professor David Eager investigated the track and the incidents.
Professor Eager recommended the installation of a safety rail, padding and the repositioning of starting boxes. The changes were made and Professor Eager cleared the track to resume racing after Friday's inspection.
GRNSW announced the return on Friday and said next Thursday's races will be held over the 400m and 450m distances.
On Friday night at The Gardens, the John Miles-trained Lately edged out track record-holder Lil Doo at the start before scoring an impressive win over 272m.
Lately began well from box seven to hold out Lil Doo on his outside en route to a three-length win over Pick A Whacker in 15.47 seconds. Lil Doo, which has the record of 15.29, was checked and finished fifth in the FFA.
Her trainer, Abermain's Darryl Wilson, had better luck in the last when Lil Doo's sister, Rosie Doo, claimed the 400m 5th grade event by 3.5 lengths in 23.02.
The Gardens hosts a 12-race meeting on Saturday from 4.44pm.
