Just after 4am on Monday emergency services were called to a service station on The Entrance Road, Long Jetty, following reports of a stabbing.
A 28-year-old man was found suffering a stab wound to his shoulder. He was treated at the scene before being taken to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.
Officers have been told a group were seen running from the area prior to their arrival and could be linked to the incident.
A search of the area has commenced, and inquiries are continuing.
