The game is a mix of rugby league, rugby union and touch football and has proved a hit in Queensland.
The Newcastle tournament will be held over three days and culminate with finals on Australia Day.
Anyone can register to enter or join a team with the competition catering to both males and females in grades from the under-12s right through to seniors.
Former Knights star Owen Craigie has signed on to play alongside other retired footballers like Lote Tuqiri, Danny Buderus, Willie Mason and Robbie O'Davis.
Craigie said the tournament would be a throwback to his younger years and he was expecting some fast and entertaining contests.
"I used to come here and play touch foody at this beach with my schoolmates," he said on Thursday.
"I think it's a great concept; Australia Day, at the beach, families having a BBQ, a swim and playing a bit of rugby. The day will be very energetic. A lot of skill, quick and little movements. It's right up my alley."
Event Director Peter Hickey said more than 80 teams had played in the most recent Queensland tournament and he was expecting a similar turnout. "Newcastle can expect an exciting weekend with lots of entertainment, music, sport and their favourite league and union players. Beach 5s Rugby is one of the fastest growing sports in Europe, so to have it here next year is really exciting."
City of Newcastle has provided $30,000 in sponsorship for the event. To register, visit: beachrugbyaustralia.com.au
