Sand dunes at Redhead and Crabbs Beach are set for improvements after Lake Macquarie City Council was awarded more than $400,000 for coastline and estuary management.

Council successfully applied for the funding from the NSW Government's Coastal and Estuary Grants Program.
Just over $237,000 will go towards dune enhancement, while $115,236 will fund floodplain rehabilitation at Wyee Bay and Dora Creek and $51,833 will help complete stage two of the Lake Macquarie coastal management program. The coastal management program is a new requirement for all coastal councils in NSW, and once it's completed council can apply for more funding to improve the health of lakes, beaches and the coastline.
Local Government Minister Shelley Hancock visited Lake Macquarie on Thursday to announce the funding, saying the program was quite competitive among councils.
"With the region being home to some of the most dynamic coastal and estuary environments in Australia, it's critical council is supported to undertake these important works," she said.
Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser acknowledged there were erosion issues along the city's beaches and said the funding would help protect the area's extensive coastline.
Lake Macquarie MP Greg Piper said the money would help look after the area's natural environment.
"Apart from the people of Lake Macquarie, the natural environment is the greatest asset that we've got here," he said.
