Police said in a statement Thursday night that paramedics had treated a man for head injuries after he was found in a serious condition inside a home just after 2pm.
Police had earlier said that a man had suffered "significant injuries" after reportedly being assaulted with a blunt instrument.
Officers from Lake Macquarie Police District established a crime scene and remained on the Wallsend Street property for several hours into the evening.
A spokesperson for Hunter New England Health said around 10pm that the man remained in hospital and was in stable condition.
Police investigations are ongoing.
