Ponga and fellow injured Maroons representatives Cameron Munster and Harry Grant were all part of Paul Green's 20-man group announced on Monday.
He missed Newcastle's 18-10 win over Manly at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday and has played in just five of the first 12 rounds this season.
His most recent NRL appearance was on May 8.
Ponga was sidelined for last year's Origin series, won by the Queensland, because of shoulder surgery undertaken at the end of the regular campaign.
He has played three times for the Maroons across 2018 and 2019.
Knights teammate Daniel Saifiti was named for NSW on Sunday night, however, Tyson Frizell didn't make the list after limping off with an ankle complaint late on the weekend.
Game one is scheduled for June 9.
