Hunter secured the colts crown for 2021 but went down in the women's decider at Scully Park on Sunday while the men's senior side lost first up on Saturday.
Hunter defeated Central Coast 14-7 in the colts showdown to collect the Rowlands Cup.
They booked a spot in the final earlier on day two when they overcame the same opponents in the last round-robin fixture.
Hunter won two of their three encounters on day one, accounting for Far North Coast (20-0) and New England (17-0) without conceding a point but were later beaten by Illawarra (21-7).
In the women's competition Hunter were defeated by Central West 35-15 in Sunday's decider.
They earned a shot at holding aloft the Thomson Cup after breezing past both Central North (34-5) and Mid North Coast (43-12) on Saturday.
In the men's main grade, fifth-ranked Hunter returned to the tournament after a three-year hiatus and were unable to make inroads after going down 21-13 to Illawarra in game one.
A 26-20 result between Far North Coast and Central Coast meant Hunter narrowly missed a second chance to make the top four as the best-placed loser.
Hunter lost Sunday's play-off with Central Coast. The Caldwell Cup was clinched by Central West.
