Having an unassailable leader and only needing to complete the course on Enoshima harbour, the Australian representatives did more than just that as they were officially crowned Olympic champions.
IN THE NEWS:
Ryan and Belcher embraced each other after in the men's 470 race, pumped their fists in the air and proudly held aloft the national flag.
They were also cheered on by their teammates, including Ryan's younger sister Jaime, while family members gathered back home at Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club.
Ryan and Belcher were silver medalists in the same event at the Rio Games five years ago.
The boat class will change in Paris in 2024, replaced by a mixed gender combination.
Ryan follows in the footsteps of fellow Lake Macquarie sailors Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen, who won gold in the men's 49er skiff in London nine years ago.
