Over the past few weeks at Corpus Christi Primary School, students involved in the Mini Vinnies committee gathered food donations for the annual Christmas appeal.

"St Vincent de Paul asked us to begin to collect Christmas foods so that everyone has a chance to celebrate with something special on Christmas day," principal Julie Mulhearn said.

"In a world where we could otherwise feel helpless the students love to have way to do something constructive."

The appeal at Corpus Christi is part of a program which sees catholic schools from across the Maitland-Newcastle diocese contribute. St Vincent de Paul members will spend next weekend sorting the donations into hampers

One of those members, Tim Howes, received the donations from the students at Corpus Christi on Friday. Mr Howes, who was once a student as at the school, said Vinnies will "get close to 50 hampers" delivered this year.

"We deliver those on the Saturday before Christmas to families who need them most around this time," Mr Howes said.

"It's a lovely catholic tradition and children and parents are very supportive."
