The weather spectacle is caused by storm activity, wind and rough surf, agitating coastal waters which contain dissolved salts, proteins, fats, dead algae, detergents and other pollutants.
It follows days of heavy rain which brought flooding to parts of the Hunter, with the Hunter River expected to peak early Thursday morning.
The Lower Hunter was expecting a partly cloudy day Thursday, with a slight chance of continuing showers as a low pressure continues to move away to the southeast.
Forecasters for the Bureau of Meteorology said that by Thursday a strengthening ridge of high pressure will form along the coast and a weak trough will develop over the inland, persisting over the weekend.
The chance of further showers continued in the forecast through Sunday.
