According to the McCrindle Baby Names Report, Oliver continued to be Australia's most popular boy's name after a decade topping the list while Charlotte remained the top name for girls.
The trends in baby names this year takes inspiration from pop culture, nature, classics and gender neutral options.
The popularity of Archie, Harvey, Margot and Adriana may all stem from pop culture while some vintage names such as Lennox, Vincent and Nora were making a comeback.
Girls names
According to the report, the most popular names for Generation Alpha girls are:
- Charlotte
- Amelia
- Isla
- Olivia
- Mia
- Ava
- Matilda
- Ella
- Grace
- Willow
Names ending with "ie" and "y" are in for baby girls, with Daisy, Ellie, Millie and Rosie increasing in popularity.
The royal family and regal themed shows such as Bridgerton were noted for its potential effect on girls name trends with noble-associated names growing in popularity.
Inspired by nature, names like Willow, Ivy, Daisy, Poppy and Eden remained popular with new parents.
Boys names
The most popular names for Generation Alpha boys according to the report are:
- Oliver
- Noah
- Leo
- William
- Henry
- Jack
- Theodore
- Hudson
- Charlie
- Luca
Theodore made its way into the top ten names for boys for the first time, pushing Lucas and Thomas out of the ten most popular names.
The top 100 list of baby boy names is largely made up of names that have remained popular for decades, such as William, Henry, James, Harry, and George.
Short names are more popular for boys. Out of the top 100 names, 86 are made up of only one or two syllables like Jack, Kai and Max.
State by state
Each state differed in their most popular name.
In Queensland, Amelia was the top choice while in Tasmania it was Grace, and Isla in South Australia and Western Australia. Charlotte dominated in Victoria, NSW, ACT and the Northern Territory.
Oliver was the most popular for parents of baby boys in Victoria, Tasmania, ACT, South Australia, Queensland and Western Australia. Noah and William was the most popular choice for boys in the Northern Territory while Noah also topped the list in NSW.
Historical trends
Generation Alpha refers to the current generation of children being born, beginning in 2010. They are the kids of millennials and the younger siblings of Generation Z.
Coming of age in an era of unprecedented technological innovation, the report speculates that parents are shunning the traditional baby book and using social media channels, podcasts and celebrity media for inspiration for their childrens' names.
