I AGREE completely with Ivan Hecimovic (‘‘We could make it our people’s team’’ Letters 13/4). I have just read David Zirin’s book on how the corporatisation is ruining American sport. He presents the Green Bay Packers as an example of a community-owned team run on a non-profit basis for the community.

Interestingly the US NFL hates this arrangement so much it has mandated that no other team be allowed to follow the model. But the Packers’ Lambeau Field has sold out every home game since 1960, showing the level of support possible for a community team.
Newcastle always talks about being a community, here is a great opportunity to show it. Membership can mean more than a season ticket – make it part of owning the team. It would be a logical progression for local players, giving us a Newcastle team and giving them the opportunity to shine and perhaps move on to the world game. Football Federation Australia needs a team in Newcastle. Let’s give them a Newcastle team.
