As one of Speers Point Swim Centre's most loyal patrons, Lorna Konopka is well known by regular pool users and staff.
For Mrs Konopka, the pool has been a source of exercise and friendship for more than 40 years.
The 72-year-old follows her own regime of aqua aerobics and laps, a combination she swears relieves her arthritis.
Mrs Konopka said swimming was the best kind of exercise.
"It's just so great because it doesn't feel like exercise," she said.
"If you do it often, you'll feel as good as you do now when you get to my age."
This Sunday, Mrs Konopka will join the community to celebrate Speers Point Swim Centre's 50th birthday.
Hosted by Lake Macquarie City Council, the celebrations will include novelty races, an aquatic challenge, synchronised swimming by the Central Coast Crystals and free-play activities.
There will also be live music, including a performance by Edgeworth singer-songwriter Arley Black.
At 10.45am, Lake Macquarie mayor Jodie Harrison will unveil a commemorative plaque to mark the occasion.
■ Speers Point Swim Centre's 50th birthday celebration is this Sunday, February 9, from 10am to 2pm at the pool. Entry is $2.
