THE annual Lake Macquarie Classic Boatfest is on at Toronto this Saturday and Sunday and, as usual, the Quick ’n’ Dirty boat building competition will be a highlight.
In the competition teams will design and construct boats, and then race them on Sunday.
Three coveted awards are up for grabs – best built boat, first in race, and most original design.
Classic Boat Association president Jim Knowles said the annual event is always an unpredictable highlight.
“Over the years we have seen some amazing designs such as a shark boat, a navy ship, Noah’s Ark and a pirate ship,’’ Mr Knowles said.
‘‘Many will remember two years ago the pirate ship sinking during the race and the team being awarded the inaugural Titanic award.’’
The event is a favourite with spectators who line the Toronto foreshore to secure a front-row seat.
Such an unusual event comes with some unusual race conditions: the judges’ decisions are final, but any protests are held underwater immediately after the race.
The build starts at 10am with the race at 1.30pm.
More than 80 classic boats – steam, sail, motor and oared craft – are expected to be on show in the water and on the foreshore.
