More than 8000 people ignored the rain and headed to Speers Point Park to enjoy the Lake Macquarie Festival.
Council's community planning manager John Ferguson said the day has always been one of the biggest on the city's calendar.
"Despite the wet start, the crowd was relatively large, very diverse and eager to celebrate," Mr Ferguson said.
"The live music on offer, especially one of the main acts, Dragon, left the crowd wanting more, as did our talented local performers who took to the stage. The spectacular fireworks finale didn't disappoint either."
