Surfers had a run at swells of around two metres at Merewether, Pogo’s and Dixon Park Beach, a day that Merewether Surfboard Club life member Tim Ryan called ‘‘quite rare’’.
‘‘It’s probably only three or four times a year you get those conditions at once, a beautiful day, an off-shore wind and biggish swell,’’ he said.
Mr Ryan said the barrelling waves were crowded, and sometimes inconsistent, but when they came they were ‘‘picture perfect’’.
Those conditions were expected to continue early on Saturday, with a swell of about 1.5 to 2.5 metres from the south to last until the afternoon.
Out of the water Saturday in Newcastle will be fine and partly cloudy, with a high of 26 degrees, with 28 degrees and a chance of a shower on Sunday.
