With grand finalists Terrigal Avoca and Killarney Vale having the week off, Newcastle City took a strong 20.18 (138) to 12.8 (80) win over Cardiff at Tulkaba Park.
The Blues introduced new faces and showed noticeably improved pace.
Cardiff, whilst well beaten, certainly showed glimpses that they will be finals contenders.
At Dick Burwell Oval Nelson Bay's 16.8 (104) beat Warners Bay 9.7 (61).
In first division, Terrigal Avoca scored the points over Maitland with a 31-point winat Max McMahon Oval.
Wyong Lakes got their premiership defence off to a strong start with a 62-point win over Cardiff, whilst Cardiff were too strong for Singleton.
