THE WALLABIES
Newcastle was very thorough in the welcome it accorded the Wallabies on Saturday. Business houses and shops were profusely decorated. At night many were illuminated, and from midday crowds poured into the city and remained until late at night. On all sides there was pronounced appreciation of the men who had accomplished the march of approximately 300 miles. The journey commenced on December 8, finishing on the 32nd day out. Many shopkeepers decked their windows in violet, the colour adopted by the Wallabies. The Master Builders' Association erected an arch across Charlton Street, at the western boundary of the city, surmounted with flags and greenery, and bearing the words: "Welcome to Newcastle," and , "Through here to Berlin." The crowd was computed as the largest that has ever lined Newcastle streets. From the city boundary at Stewart Street, where there was a dense assemblage, to the Post Office, a distance of a good deal over a mile, the footways were crowded, and each balcony carried a large number of spectators. They joined in cheering the Wallabies, while the tram whistles cock-a-doodle-doo'd with vigour.
