They defeated the giant-killing Dora Creek Workers team of Tim Thornton, John Carmody, Leigh Gibson and Scott Hollingworth 23-18 in a keenly contested final played at Beresfield. The turning point in the match came on the eighth end with Hollingworth leading 6-4, when Brown’s team scored a three followed by a one and a five to establish a match-winning 13-6 advantage.
In the semi-finals Brown downed Stephen Strudwick, Michael Bourke, John Synott and Mark Lowndes (Windale/Gateshead) 22-12. Hollingworth proved too strong for Tony Falcocchio, Michael Munn, Howard Smith and Bill Ahoy (Kahibah) winning 30-15.
SHIELD WON
Newcastle are the new holders of the Rod Robards Memorial Shield following their hard fought 113-99 victory over the Hunter last Friday at Kurri Kurri winning on four rinks to two rinks. The combination of Warren Shipley, Daniel Hill, Jason Stokes and Shannon Gittoes, set up the Newcastle win defeating Rohan Dennis, Craig Barbour, Corey Parker and Brodie Pitham 27-10. The other successful Newcastle skippers were Lennon Scott 17-14 over Nathan Dawson, Jack Ryan 18-14 against Brodie Jobson, and Lachlan Freeman beat Tailor Appleby 24-18. The triumphant Hunter skippers were Josh Bell 24-11 over Jakob Graham and Caleb Threadgate edged out Mitchell Bellingham 19-16.
TRIPLES TO BEGIN
The Newcastle District Triples Championship commences on Saturday with 2014 titleholders Wayne Squires and Logan Brown attempting to complete the District Fours-Triples double. They have a new second in Chris Handley and have a tough first round match against the Raymond Terrace trio of Jesse Herbert, Corey Hayman and Tony Wicks at Adamstown. Defending titleholders Jamie Minter, Jason Stokes and Lennon Scott (Raymond Terrace) meet Adamstown’s Jason Bowles, Ken Ryan and Wayne Bartlett in the second round at Lambton.
PRE-SEASON SEMIS
Kurri Kurri is the first team to qualify for the Beresfield No.1 Grade pre-season competition semi-finals following its 61-41 victory over Halekulani on Monday. Nathan Dawson’s 27-12 win over Paul Williams proved decisive. Kurri Kurri claimed Section 1 on 20.5 points from defending titleholders Raymond Terrace on 20 points.
MATCH MEETING
The NDBA Match Committee will meet on Thursday evening to conduct the annual Sides, Captains and Selectors seminar at Association Headquarters commencing at 6.30pm. All clubs should have representatives in attendance. Entries close on Wednesday for the District Pairs and State Senior (over 60s) Pairs Championships.
