The proposed Mayfield East Village complex, on Maitland Road between Havelock and Church streets, has been significantly scaled back since being approved by the Joint Regional Planning Panel in 2010.
An Aldi supermarket and several specialty shops have been removed from the plans.
The new proposal, lodged by the property development arm of Coles, will include a Coles supermarket, 11 specialty retail units and 227 parking spaces.
The development application said the complex would pump an additional $29.6million into the town’s economy.
‘‘[The complex] could have flow-on effects to other retailers and businesses in Mayfield who are positioned to take advantage of the injection of retail sales, higher customer traffic and employment growth,’’ the application stated.
It is estimated the complex will create 130 full-time jobs.
The proposal was the second major development to go on exhibition with Newcastle City Council yesterday.
Plans for the redevelopment of the former Newcastle Regional Museum building, reported in the Newcastle Herald last week, were placed on display.
They reveal plans for 47 serviced apartments in the heritage-listed building, built as the Castlemaine & Wood Bros Brewery. Plans also include the demolition of non-heritage listed parts of the building, including a 1938-built store.
The development application includes the demolition of the S&W Miller building, leaving six undeveloped lots facing Stewart Avenue.
