Westcott’s Berlin Marathon time of 2:15:30 in September finished as the third fastest by an Australian in the qualifying period, which ended Sunday. He was second before Liam Adams ran 2.14.59 in the Warsaw Marathon on Sunday. Other contenders for the three Australian Olympic places fell short of Westcott’s time.
Athletics Australia was expected to name its marathon team nominees on Monday but selectors will now meet Tuesday morning. The Australian Olympic Committee will likely confirm nominations on Friday.
Westcott, 40, ran qualifying times for the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympics but was not selected. He was short of the mark in 2012 and announced his retirement from elite marathons in 2013 before his comeback in Berlin.
