Piggott had already said he was all but certain not to stay on for a second National Premier League season at the Magpies in 2017.
The Magpies, who are fourth on 19 points, two clear of Charlestown, are now searching for a B-licenced coach to take over for their final six games of this year.
Maitland parted ways with Chris Turner early last year in their return season to the top league and had assistant Reece Thompson step up to the head coaching role.
Piggott, who had coached at the club more than a decade earlier, returned after a season away from the league following his sacking after one campaign with Weston, who he took to the grand final.
