The Hunter TAFE head fine art teacher has been awarded the $15,000 Norvill Art Prize for his painting Snow on Higher Ground.
The prize is one of the largest privately-funded landscape art prizes in Australia.
Winners must capture the distinctiveness of the Australian landscape.
Mr Morris said he chose the image because it was not the stereotypical Australian vista.
Entries in the art prize are on exhibition at Murrurundi RSL Hall on weekends until October 28.
Mr Morris has taught at TAFE for 20 years, while being widely exhibited in Sydney and Melbourne and having his works added to corporate and regional collections.
Fellow Newcastle Art school teacher Lezlie Tilley took out the $10,000 Gosford Art Prize announced this week.
Mr Morris said the fact two art teachers could take out two major awards in one month was a testament to the reputation of the 120-year-old Newcastle Art School.
