Over the next 13 weeks I am planning to use this column to help as many of you out there get motivated towards a healthier and fitter you come Summer.
Getting fitter and healthier is much easier talked about than it is actually done.
Not everyone can run 10 kilometres. Not everyone can swim and not everyone likes going to the gym to lift weights or take part in a class.
So sometimes is a matter of finding the right fit for each individual. That might be in terms of exercise as well as diet.
This week I want to tell you about a women’s cycling program that is being received well nationwide. It is called She Rides and is a Cycling Australia initiative.
The program is aimed towards women of all ages and abilities and involves meeting for a two-hour ride once a week over an eight-week program.
She Rides is a suite of riding programs which focuses on building fitness, developing skills and creating a social riding community of women in both the areas of road cycling and mountain bike riding.
Experienced cycling couple and accredited cycling coaches Jenny and Damien Enderby, of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie cycle coaching and fitness business Bike and Fitness, will be running the program, which starts in October, for the third time.
Both Jenny and Damien have won multiple national titles in several sports including triathlon, duathlon, cross country mountain biking and orienteering.
They have also represented Australia on the world stage with Jenny winning world championship medals in both duathlon and orienteering. They have also both had great success in the sport of adventure racing.
But mostly, they are passionate about leading a healthy lifestyle and about helping others enjoy all the benefits of exercise in a fun and suitable environment.
When I spoke to Jenny recently she could not speak highly enough of the She Rides program, saying “it is always good to see ladies gain confidence and this program is social as well as getting fitter and new skills”.
They have had ladies come along in their 70s, some who have never ridden a bike as a child and who have revelled in the program.
Jenny and Damien are running three mountain biking programs and one road confidence program. They aim to show participants the basics of cycling if they are newcomers as well as safe places to ride with confidence.
The idea is the eight-week program will foster a love and confidence of cycling that participants will continue well after the program has finished.
The benefits of cycling are numerous and include being low impact, which means it can be good for people carrying injuries or on the comeback trail from injury.
All She Rides programs are delivered by accredited cycling coaches. Registrations are open and programs commence October 1. More information at www.sherides.com.au, www.bikeandfitness.com.au or on 0411 260 735.
