The London-born funnyman and author spotted the 23-year-old during her end-of-year performance with the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA).
‘‘I’d been at WAAPA for three years doing the acting course and Ben happened to be at the Perth showcase,’’ Davidson told The Word yesterday.
After several more auditions, Davidson landed a role on Ben Elton Live from Planet Earth, which screens on Tuesdays at 9.30pm on NBN. Tonight will mark the show’s third episode.
She performs in a series of live skits including as a schoolgirl, opposite fellow comedian Kate McLennan, and as a soul singer annoyed at a rapper.
Davidson is hopeful the show will continue despite suffering two weeks of dismal ratings.
Ben Elton Live From Planet Earth came in 26th place behind Judge Judy in the Hunter and the Central Coast last week, with an audience of 18,400.
‘‘We are all aware we are trying to create something new. We’re trying to nut out the problems and develop the show,’’ Davidson said. ‘‘I think the show will continue to grow. It would be great to get the first six episodes out.’’
The show has enabled Davidson to gain first-hand experience of live television, and she is extremely grateful to Elton for this.
The actress, singer and dancer attended the Hunter School of Performing Arts at Broadmeadow and grew up at Charlestown.
She is now based in Sydney and splits her time between her home, filming the show in Melbourne and visiting family in Newcastle.
