Mr Campbell had been on Fox Glacier – on the country’s South Island – with his son, Anthony, on Wednesday when he fell down a ravine.
Anthony found his 66-year-old father’s body about an hour later.
Mr Campbell’s devastated family, who flew to New Zealand on Thursday as rescuers were able to recover his body, have released a statement.
“Tony died in the Fox Valley Glacier in a tragic accident,’’ the statement said.
“The family are glad he was with his son and best mate, doing something he loved very much.
“The 66-year-old died in a place he was passionate about, having visited New Zealand many times over the last 30 years.
“Tony was a proud family man who loved his wife, three children, and their partners and his two grandchildren very dearly.
“He also adored his extended family, including his mother, siblings and many nieces and nephews.
“He was a true gentleman.
“He was also a talented builder.
“The family would like to thank the rescuers and everyone in New Zealand who have been so caring and supportive.
“He will be deeply missed.”
