The estate will open tomorrow, providing 5000 housing lots that are tipped to accommodate 15,000 people.
The suburb was originally flagged during the 1990s and was set to become one of the biggest urban land release areas in the region.
Maitland councillor Arch Humphery will officiate at the estate's launch tomorrow, which will also mark the opening of HomeWorld, the region's newest display home village.
The village, on Whitetip Street, off Raymond Terrace Road, will have 43 display houses by 15 builders
Cr Humphery said that with such a large representation of builders there was a huge choice of designs, with prices ranging from $130,000 to more than $600,000.
"I was on a council committee that really started Chisholm moving along about four to five years ago and it is really pleasing to see something that has been talked about for a long time come to fruition," Cr Humphery said.
"It is also great to see so many people with confidence in Maitland, it's absolutely fantastic for those who want to live here," he said.
The display home village needed to be up and running before the land was released.
Maitland Mayor Peter Blackmore said the exhibition village would be popular.
"These homes will showcase some of the finest builders in the Hunter," he said.
The Herald reported in 2008 that the release of Thornton North (Chisholm) was imminent after the state government approved regional transport infrastructure funding for Thornton.
Original plans for the new suburb were part of the Maitland Urban Settlement Strategy.
