ARCHDEACON of Adelaide Peter Stuart has been appointed new assistant bishop for the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle.

Bishop of Newcastle Dr Brian Farran announced yesterday that Archdeacon Stuart would replace recently retired Bishop Graeme Rutherford.
The announcement came in the lead-up to a farewell for Dean of Newcastle Graeme Lawrence last night.
Dean Lawrence, who has been rector of Newcastle landmark Christ Church Cathedral for 25 years, announced last week he would be stepping down from the pulpit.
More than 300 business and community leaders attended the farewell function where they were given fragments of a 100-year-old fig tree from the grounds of the cathedral. The tree fell down in the June 2007 storms.
Bishop Brian Farran said the new assistant bishop Archdeacon Stuart would be a good leader.
"He has a track record of innovation, creativity and of wise pastoral administration," Dr Farran said.
Archdeacon Stuart worked in the dioceses of Tasmania and Adelaide and is a former senior lecturer in theology at Flinders University.
He is married to Nicki, a senior physiotherapist, and two children, Ben, 12 and Rebekah, 9.
Archdeacon Stuart, 45, said young people were vital members of the church.
"Women make a profound contribution to the ordained ministry and we do not sufficiently welcome people living with disability," he said.
He will be consecrated in February next year.
