The whales bedazzled a lucky few who were on a tour at Port Stephens, while in Newcastle a 30-strong pod of dolphins swam close to the shore at Nobbys beach.
An estimated 30,000 humpbacks will travel along the NSW coastline in coming months and Imagine Whale Watching Tour veteran Frank Future says the region is in for a bumper season.
“It’s my favourite time of the year, the northern Humpback migration to Hervey Bay to breed,” Mr Future said.
“The ‘whale highway’ is getting busier every year and if sightings over the weekend week are anything to go by, we are going to put a lot of grins on faces over the next two months.”
“The pods are getting bigger every year and we are always keeping an eagle-eye out for famous white whale Migaloo, which we have had five encounters with over the years,” Mr Future added.
