SINGLE THEORY An evening drive out on Texas’ Highway 90 to see the mysterious Marfa lights is the inspiration behind the Gooch Palms’ latest single. The Newcastle punk duo released Marfa Lights, the second single off their forthcoming third album, on Thursday. Drummer Kat Friend wrote the lyrics two years ago after the pair ventured into the West Texas desert to see the bright orbs of light, which some people claim are signs of alien or paranormal activity. However, scientists believe it’s caused by atmospheric reflections off automobile headlights.

NO JOKE The days of the former Newcastle Train Station collecting pigeon poo and dust are over with local comedy festival Not Just For Laughs relaunching the building as a creative public space on September 30 and October 1. After the festival’s success at the Crown & Anchor Hotel last year the comedy showcase was forced to find a bigger home.
