
A PASSENGER has allegedly jumped into the drivers seat of a car and sped away during a police roadside stop.
About 2.30pm Sunday officers from Hunter Valley Police District observed a vehicle on Northcote Street, crossing the intersection of Colliery at speed.
Police stopped the vehicle and spoke to the 19-year-old female driver.
Whilst officers were conducting checks of the driver in their police vehicle, a 24-year-old male passenger has allegedly climbed to the drivers seat and driven away.
Police attempted to stop the vehicle, and a pursuit was initiated.
The pursuit was later terminated due to safety concerns.
The vehicle was seen by police in the Kurri Kurri area, and the 24-year-old man was arrested after a foot pursuit.
He was taken to Cessnock Police Station where he was charged with police pursuit not stop – drive recklessly, assault with intent to take/drive motor vehicle, two count of possess prohibited drug, refuse or fail to submit to taking of blood sample, and refuse or fail to provide urine sample.
He was refused bail to appear in Maitland Local Court on Monday.
