A PEDESTRIAN has miraculously survived after he was hit by a four-wheel drive and ended up in a nearby ditch.
The 30-year-old was walking along Wermol Street in Kurri Kurri, near the intersection of Northcote Street, when he was hit by the vehicle about 1pm Friday.
The four-wheel drive was towing a trailer and travelling in a 50 kilometres per hour speed zone when the incident occurred.
According to reports from the scene, the pedestrian went under the car before he was flung into a nearby trench.
He was unconscious and barely breathing when emergency services were called to the scene.
Three ambulance crews and the Westpac helicopter arrived on scene shortly after and the man regained consciousness.
He was flown to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition, with injuries to his hip and chest pain.
Police will investigate the circumstances leading up to the crash. The road was closed in both direction while crews worked to clear the scene.
