Artists keen to participate in the competition will gain their first peek at the object they'll be asked to work with. The prize will be looking for "works that inject art into an object and an object into art". The prescribed object becomes subject matter, to be interpreted by a variety of artists, across multiple media.
The Friends of the University of Newcastle will sponsor two prizes of $1000 each. Other major prizes include the $1500 Penny Finnigan Memorial prize and the $800 University Art Collection award.
The exhibition, featuring works made for the challenge, will run from September 4 to 29.
