Hughes now has 43 majors next to his name in 2019, including four in the third term alone as part of a 77-point win against Nelson Bay at Pasterfield Sports Complex.
He also slotted one each in the first and last quarters.
Eleven of Cardiff's six pointers were made in the second half as the third-placed Hawks (16.15-111) ran over the top of the Marlins (4.10-34).
Nelson Bay kept Cardiff to 13 in the second period, but the visitors still trailed by 30 at the main break.
Elsewhere in round 12 fixtures on Saturday, Terrigal Avoca and Newcastle City maintained their joint competition lead by accounting for Warners Bay and Gosford respectively. The Panthers (12.11-83) beat the Bulldogs (6.3-39) while the Blues (18.21-129) thumped the Tigers (2.4-16).
Singleton (16.10-106) defeated Maitland (4.6-30) and Wyong Lakes (7.8-50) lost to Killarney Vale (14.9-93).
