A "rusty" Newcastle Jets had to work overtime to secure a hard fought 1-0 win over a young and energetic Edgeworth Eagles in a pre-season friendly at Jack McLaughlan Oval on Saturday.

A fortuitous goal to Dimi Petratos in the 23rd minute proved the difference in stop-start affair that lacked slick ball movement.
The Socceroos swung a corner in from the left to the near post. Jets fullback Matt Millar made a diagonal run towards goal. It was enough to put off the defender and keeper Josh Low and the ball bounce in to the back of the net.
Kaine Shepherd headed home a Jason Hoffman cross in the 47th minute - the Jets' best piece of combination play - but it was surprisingly pulled back for offside.
Steve Ugarkovic hit the crossbar and Low denied Petratos with two brilliant saves.
But it was anything but one-way traffic.
The Eagles were well organised, compact and threatened on the break.
Jets keeper Noah James produced a spectacular finger-tip save to deny Oliver Smith a equaliser in the 32nd minute.
The striker hit a thunderbolt from 20 metres which was headed into the top right corner, only for the Young Socceroos shot-stopper to dive full-stretch to his left and touch the ball on to the right post.
Liam Spurway had a shot from the edge of the box fizz past the outside of the left post and Aden Gardner hit the post with a freekick.
Right fullback Matt Millar was the Jets' best. He motored up and down the touchline and looked the most dangerous.
Overall, the A-League side were clunky, their ball movement was slow at times and they found it difficult to break down a resolute Eagles defence.
"We were very rusty, particularly in the first half," Jets coach Ernie Merrick said. "Credit to [Edgeworth coach] Damian Zane, he has done a great job with a young team. They were very well organised, they kept their shape well and made it very difficult for us. We didn't get many chances and scored a lucky goal.
"The second half we pressed a lot more and played most of the game in their half, but the combinations up front were pretty poor. That is where we really have to sharpen up. I thought our defence was solid and our midfield were fine."
Played over 40 minute halves with drinks breaks, the match was the Jets' first competitive hit-out and followed an intraclub trial which the A-League squad beat the youth team 6-1.
Ben Kantarovski dropped in as a makeshift stopper, with Nickolai Topor-Stanley on the bench and Nigel Boogaard not risked.
Import Abdiel Arroyo, who arrived on Thursday from Panama, watched from the stands.
Edgeworth, who were backing up after beating Darwin Olympic in the FFA Cup Round of 32 in the Northern Territory on Wednesday night, fielded a young outfit.
Pat Wheeler, at 27, was the only player older than 22.
"I am very proud of them," Zane said. "We knew they were going to dominate possession but we set up to nullify them and try to get something on the break. The most pleasing thing was that we have made advancements keeping the ball and countering. It was another little step for us. The back three - Pat Wheeler, Noah Steinerts and Dylan Burston were superb."
Meanwhile, in the Northern NSW NPL, Finn Parris scored a brace to lead Lambton Jaffas to a 3-0 win over the Newcastle Jets youth team at Edden Oval.
Connor Heydon scored both goals as Adamstown Rosebud held Hamilton Olympic to a 2-all draw at Darling Street Oval.
