The Magpies, who back-up against Valentine in another catch-up game on Saturday, were a goal down inside 20 seconds at Edden Oval when Braedyn Crowley ran onto a through-ball from Brock Messenger.
Maitland responded with a class goal in the 13th minute to Ryan Clarke.
Off a Jaffas free kick, the Magpies broke quickly down the right through James Thompson, whose cross was cleverly flicked on by Joel Wood to an unmarked Clarke for the tap-in.
The result lifted Maitland to 34 points and equal with Weston, but the Magpies are a goal better on for and against. They sit a point behind Edgeworth, who, like Weston, have played one game more and don't feature this weekend.
The Jaffas, who are away to Lake Macquarie on Sunday in their catch-up match, went to 31 points but dropped to sixth with Charlestown's win.
The Blues rose to fifth on 32 points to sit equal with fourth-placed Broadmeadow but two goals behind them on for and against. They host the Jets Youth on Sunday, while Broadmeadow are away to Hamilton.
At Macquarie Field on Wednesday night, Charlestown led 2-0 at half-time through goals from Matt Tull and Rio Nishiura.
Tull got his boot to a corner in the 21st minute and Nishiura scored with a skilful run and quality strike in the 43rd. The Japanese livewire evaded two defenders inside the 18-yard box before firing a shot into the top-right corner of goals.
Lachlan Pasquale made it 3-0 on 70 minutes when his cross lobbed the keeper and fell inside the back post.
