The Newcastle competition season is scheduled to begin on March 28 but a statement from Newcastle Netball Association president Cheryl Hernando through a facebook post on Saturday said "we are reviewing the start date to our regular season, and we will keep you updated as things evolve."
The statement also read:
"With effect from Monday 16th March, non-essential public gatherings of more than 500 people are to be suspended. Clearly, this will have a potential impact on how we coordinate and deliver our various competitions, events and programs in the short term. As a precautionary measure, the Sub Junior Carnival scheduled to take place Sunday 15 March 2020 has been postponed. Furthermore, our Monday night Twilight games have been abandoned."
On Friday, the Super Netball league's official pre-season tournament, the Suncorp Team Girls Cup, was cancelled due the risk associated coronavirus. The pre-season tournament was due to take place in Sydney from March 27 to 29.
On Friday, Super Netball chief executive Chris Symington said the health of all stakeholders involved in the event was at the forefront of the decision to cancel.
"The league's priority at this stage is the health of our athletes, staff and fans," Symington said.
"Following a thorough risk analysis, and consultation with medical experts and relevant stakeholders, league management made the call to demonstrate caution and cancel the Suncorp Team Girls Cup, which would have brought the entire league to one location.
"Our focus will now be on monitoring the COVID-19 situation as it develops and ensuring we have appropriate plans in place to deal with whatever challenges may arise in delivering the 2020 Suncorp Super Netball season."
League management has advised clubs to reconsider their current schedule of pre-season matches, ensuring all government and health advice is followed.
Symington said Suncorp Super Netball league management and medical professionals will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation as it evolves in relation to the upcoming 2020 season, which is due to start on May 2.
All tickets purchased to the Suncorp Team Girls Cup will reportedly be refunded.
On Saturday, Netball Australia announced it would not proceed with the annual 17&U and 19&U National Netball Championships in Hobart from April 18 until 23.
Netball Australia chief executive Marne Fechner said the health of the Australian netball and wider community was paramount and that Netball Australia continued to work closely with state and territory member organisations in relation to community and grassroots netball.
"It was an incredibly difficult decision not to proceed with the National Netball Championships, especially knowing how much preparation by the athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers goes into this event," Fechner said.
"It is however prudent that we do everything we can to reduce the spread of the virus. In relation to community netball, we are working with member organisations, government organisations and medical professionals to determine the best approach and we will release guidelines to support community netball organisations across Australia in the coming days."
