The Newcastle West artist designed the front page artwork for Saturday's Herald and said it was fun getting to know more about the players. The artwork depicts Daniel and Jacob Saifiti, David Klemmer, Mitchell Pearce, Kalyn Ponga and Edrick Lee running from a wave, which Ben said was an ode to Newcastle's iconic beaches.
"The six athletes I used are all good athletes but they're all interesting too," he said. "The fact that there's twins, but one has longer hair and a scar. I had to learn all their tattoos - Klemmer and Pearce both have Mexican sugar skull ladies. I don't know if that's a coincidence."
Ben also had to make a last minute change to Klemmer.
"I originally drew him bald but then I saw a picture and had to put hair back on."
Despite not being an avid fan, Ben's fondest football memory was of the 1997 grand final and drew inspiration from the iconic grey t-shirt celebrating the match.
