Police found 21-year-old woman Mackenzie Anderson with significant injuries lying outside her home in Mayfield on Friday night.
Police and NSW Ambulance paramedics assisted the woman but she died at the scene.
A one-year-old child was also found at the scene, covered in blood but physically unharmed, police said on Saturday.
Local commander Superintendent Wayne Humphrey said the child appeared to have been present during the incident and was being cared for by relatives.
The 22-year-old man, who is also from Mayfield, was arrested and taken to hospital for a hand injury.
He has since been charged with murder, aggravated enter dwelling with intent, and breaching a domestic violence order.
The man was refused bail and is due to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Monday.
