Police said a Toyota Landcruiser was travelling north on High Street when it left the roadway and hit the front of a home at the intersection of Morpeth Street at about 3pm on Sunday.
The home sustained structural damage and the occupant, an 74-year-old man, who had been asleep in a front bedroom was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition, where he died on Monday.

Officers from Port-Stephens Hunter Police District attended along with NSW Ambulance paramedics.
Initial inquiries suggest the 69-year-old driver suffered a medical episode prior to the collision.
He was revived and taken to John Hunter Hospital where he remained in a critical condition on Monday.
A female inside the house was also medically assessed and escaped serious harm, Fire and Rescue NSW said.
An exclusion zone was established around the site, pending a further safety inspection.
