The two tiny arrivals latched onto their koala foster mum when their own mothers couldn’t produce milk, and she has welcomed them with open arms.

It is the first time in the history of the Somersby park that a koala has had a brood of three. Visitors often mistake them for triplets.

“Koalas don’t have twins or triplets. If they did it would be very rare, but just as rare is a single koala caring for up to three babies at one time,” park general manager Tim Faulkner said.

“Truthfully, the other two babies should be weaned from milk and onto eucalyptus leaves now, but Jill is so nurturing they’re loving their adopted mum to bits.”

Each baby weighs about a kilogram, so six-kilogram Jill frequently carries half her body weight.

The blended family of four can be found cuddled up sleeping in their enclosure, or climbing eucalyptus trees.
