IT’S OBVIOUS we are going to be in for a long dry summer. Shouldn't we be starting water conservation plans now? It's no good waiting until the levels in our dams become critical to introduce them. Many of my neighbours are not only watering their lawns but also their nature strips using what is going to become an scarce commodity. Bans now will mean more essential water is available when it’s needed later.
Ann Ellis, Merewether
SINCE deregulation and privatisation in NSW, power prices have become increasingly unaffordable despite the Premier at the time assuring us that prices would likely fall and would not go up. Over several years, NSW’s IPART failed to stop energy providers raising tariffs above the CPI. Energy producer AGL has reported an increased profit of almost 200 per cent. Surely NSW consumers have a right to feel dudded by the NSW Government’s privatisation and deregulation of energy in our state.

IN REPLY to Dennis Kershaw (Short Takes 18/8): like you, I have recently been in Melbourne and was pleased to see trams marked “made in Melbourne for Melbourne”. I took a photo too. NSW should follow this example. I enjoyed the free zones but can't see that happening here either.
Margaret Taylor, Eleebana
THANK you Peter Grant (Short Takes 20/8) for pointing out that we have no right to have an opinion on our Newcastle pools because of the drought. After acknowledging the farmers and their plight in print and contributing financially and physically to those less fortunate we believed that we could do very little else. Perhaps then we have the right to acknowledge the swimming facilities in our city.

GREAT result, Knights (‘Knights roll up their sleeves’, Herald 20/8). Congratulations. No spoon this season.

WHILE the installation of Peter Dutton as PM may save some of the rural and provincial political furniture in Queensland, the reaction of voters in the more populous states of NSW and Victoria will lead to the loss of the whole house.
Ian De Landelles, Murrays Beach
WHEN will our so-called leaders actually attack climate change forcefully, realistically and genuinely?
Georgia Phillips, Salamander Bay
MALCOLM Turnbull is not a leader, he is a party room pleaser.

JEFF Corbett (‘The art of doing nothing’, Herald 20/8): part of the retirees’ creed should be nothing to do, all day to do it. If one looks like finishing, try and put it off for three days.
