O’Connell struck 25 boundaries in his 194-ball innings at Woongarrah Oval.
Zach Abel scored 62 before he was run out. O’Connell and Abel featured in a 146-run partnership for the third wicket after the visitors had been 1-0 and 2-47.
Nathaniel Stokes (26) and Caine Barnes (22) also made starts.
Warnervale will resume this Saturday at 1-13 having faced 10 overs. They will look to veterans Scott Atkinson and Kaine Harmsworth to do much of the heavy lifting.
In Newcastle district cricket, Toronto Workers scored a first innings win over Charlestown in the match at Ron Hill Oval.
Responding to Toronto’s total of 301, Charlestown fell for 204. Daniel Arms (47) top-scored for the visitors.
Toronto’s Tim Cox (5-26) and Dylan Robertson (4-29) shared the bowling honours.
Toronto Workers will travel to take on Northern Districts this Saturday.
