THURSDAY'S article ('Call to revive state job', Newcastle Herald 18/4) refers to the abolition of the position of Parliamentary Secretary to the Hunter. During the period that Scot MacDonald was carrying out that role, he copped plenty of criticism from locals and I really don't recall any favourable comments about him or his work in the area from those who are now calling for the position to be reinstated.

UNLIKE Craig Budden (Short Takes 18/4), Prime Minister Scott Morrison cares that Julian Assange did harm to Australia. To earn the usual miles, let alone extra, he should have redacted the files that hurt Australia. In my opinion Australia shouldn't go a sixteenth of an inch for him.

STEVE Barnett (Short Takes 19/4), firstly your apology is accepted. It didn't need to be as much as you kindly did. Secondly, please don't put down your pen. An informed debate needs at least two sides so others can decide for themselves. While I may disagree with many of your comments, they are always so concise and articulated so well. I do disagree with your tongue-in-cheek comments on vegan protesters. I hope you had a great break and to 'see you' again soon.

WHO tests the bottle water we buy and drink believing it's safe, that's my question. In my opinion we really don't know what we are drinking, and I for one have suspicions that it's causing me problems. After living for 20 years drinking tank water, I moved to town and after tasting the town water decided to buy bottled water. Three years on, my hair has been thinning (oh, due to getting on in years, you say) and now the loss of hair is disturbingly clear. I suspect bottled water.

SINCE the Prime Minister announced the date of the election, he has travelled around the country criticising the policies of the Labor Party at every opportunity, yet it seems to me that if someone criticizes his party's policies he all but threatens to shut them down. Two glaring examples are GetUp! and the ABC. It only adds weight to the old saying: the truth hurts.

IN the Liberal Party there is a group of traitors who brought down the Turnbull Liberal Government. I believe these traitors would stoop to any from of treachery, to realise their ambition to seize power, and in my opinion these smiling assassins need to be purged from the party now. They are the cancer of the Liberal Party.

STEAM is still steam regardless of what boils the water, Steve Barnett (Short Takes 17/4). Eggs have been successfully boiled for years now without using coal stoves, so it shouldn't be too difficult to power steam trains without it as well. Assuming of course, that Bill Shorten doesn't confiscate them along with our petrol driven cars.
