IN reply to Carl Stevenson (Letters, 9/7), I can only imagine that alcohol is sold at NRL games because of its numerous alcohol sponsors. I sometimes dream of the days before wowsers when I could sit on an esky on the hill, have a beer and a durrie and watch the Winfield Cup. Go Knights.

IN reply to Tony Morley (Short Takes 2/7): mate I've been in the Andrew Johns Stand for the last two games. Gates opened at 3pm, and both bars and food outlets were open. Next week come over. Your shout.

JOHN Cooper (Letters, 8/7) quotes a CSIRO report to suggest nuclear generation, and coal fired generation with carbon capture and storage (CCS) is competitive with renewable energy generation. The CSIRO's GenCost 2018 report clearly finds "new-build renewable generation to be least cost, including when we add the cost of two or six hours of energy storage to wind and solar.'' Their current figures show black coal with CCS to be about 60 per cent dearer and nuclear about 230 per cent dearer than renewables with six-hour storage. It sounds to me like Pat Conroy ('Nuclear power means bigger energy bills', Opinion 2/7) and the CSIRO's latest figures are very similar.

AS a recent convert to the Rastafarian faith, I'm looking forward to the introduction of the religious freedom bill ('Religious bill divides Coalition MPs', Newcastle Herald 10/7). As the bible tells us clearly, marijuana is a sacred herb. I shall be smoking the hooch at every opportunity with complete impunity from persecution. Thanks, ScoMo.

PAULINE Hanson states that Australia is a "Christian country" (Today, 8/7) which is not true as we are a secular democracy. The federal constitution enshrines the secularism that enables different religious views and voices to operate in the community.

USQUE ad Sanguinis Effusionem ('Blood oath', Newcastle Herald 9/7). Seems just right to me. It is what I would expect of any priest hearing my confession.

IF any church refuses mandatory reporting of child abuse or the confessional seal is above the law, then I believe the government should de-register them and charge them tax. They don't belong in our society if they can't help protect our kids.

I BELIEVE KEPCO should not be allowed to take land in the Bylong Valley ('KEPCO 'encouraged' to buy Bylong land', Newcastle Herald 10/7)for any purpose whatsoever.

RYAN Adamson (Short Takes, 10/7), I would imagine that you would be an excellent punter. Your horse finishing way down the track would in your eyes still be the winner. Trying to collect your ticket would be a sight to see. A winner is a winner; there is no prize for second in a two horse race.
