Jets striker Valentino Yuel believes the intensity of the F3 Derby got the better of him on Sunday and his reactions may have cost his side a chance to salvage a result.

And with what he believes will be another derby atmosphere against the Western Sydney Wanderers on Sunday at Commbank Stadium, Yuel has vowed to learn his lesson.
Yuel came off the bench in the 63rd minute in place of Olivier Boumal with the Jets down 2-0 to the Mariners in their A-League season-opener at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday.
The livewire gave Newcastle hope with a crisp header off a pinpoint accurate Angus Thurgate cross in the 77th minute but the score remained 2-1 at full-time.
Tempers flared late in the rain-soaked match and Yuel was in the thick of it.
Jets coach Arthur Papas told the press post-match that his side needed to handle their emotions better in the derby and Yuel was one to get the message directly.
"They made me aware of that," Yuel said after training on Tuesday. "It's a derby and straight away we had momentum on our side and I think I got a little bit sucked in and I think I should have been a bit more in control.
"But it's behind us now, and obviously if I'm ever in that position again I wouldn't let my emotions get the best of me ... Maybe if they didn't stop the game like that, I probably would have got a goal and maybe a third as well. We could have come out on top."
Attention now turns to the Wanderers, who had five Jets players from last season in their line-up in a scoreless draw with Sydney in round one.
Newcastle's rivalry with Wanderers is growing quickly and Yuel expected another intense battle.
"You could say another derby, I guess," he said. "But it's normal. We know how they play, obviously playing with [those players] last year. We know their strengths and stuff like that, so we're going to prepare the best we can and go out and play our game. I think there's no reason we shouldn't go there and take all three points."
Yuel made a great start last season, scoring four times in the first seven rounds, before he failed to find the back of the net again. The 27-year-old was keen to back up another good start this year under the new boss.
"There's a lot of areas I wanted to approve in coming into this season and one of them was being more consistent," he said.
"It doesn't matter if I start or if I come off the bench, for me it's to have that impact when I'm getting chances, to be ruthless in front of goals and to take advantage of any chances I get.
"It was very clear when the boss came in, so I think I've improved a lot coming into this season. The more chances I get this year, I'd like to keep that momentum going and have a more positive season than I did last year."
Jason Hoffman (adductor) did not train Tuesday after coming off early against the Mariners. He is in doubt for this weekend but the Jets do not expect him to be sidelined long-term. Lucas Mauragis is back training after returning from Olyroos duties and quarantine.
