Emergency services were called to Glenwood Drive about 11.45am after a Toyota HiAce reportedly crossed to the wrong side of the road while heading west.
Police were told the car hit a guard rail and rolled.
The driver, who was the only person in the car, died at the scene.
Port Stephens-Hunter police established a crime scene.
The man is yet to be formally identified, police said, but is believed to be aged in his 50s.

Weakleys Drive and Glenwood Drive remained closed at 1pm.
Drivers have been urged to avoid the area as an investigation gets underway.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
